Press

Prints by James Lang of Horwinski Printing Company presented by Creative IQ & Rock Paper Scissiors Collective

Exhibit Duration: April 3rd - June 1st, 2016
Opening Reception: Sunday, April 3rd, 2-6pm
Join Creative IQ in celebration of a legacy Artist existing in an ever increasing digital world. James Lang’s work is letterpress-printed in Oakland on a hundred-year-old Miehle flatbed press. The process of letterpress printing involves a step called make-ready, which is the last step before the final print job. Master printmaker James Lang soon recognized artistic opportunities and started layering prints to create his own artwork, using the letterpress printing skills passed down from his father and his father's father before him.

James co-opts the make-ready step and asserts aesthetic authorship to design the printed layers, allowing for certain words and colors to pop out in an initial glance, or float to the surface, while the density of the layered text provides discoveries in wordplay during extended contemplation on the part of the viewer. Each of these prints is one-of-a-kind, as James brings together the placement of the text of previous print jobs--ranging from artistic, political, or commercial, and including wrestling, roller derby, music performances, Occupy, union, etc.--with thoughtful use of color and negative space.

Prints layer a variety of texts, including over a prior printed poster. The print, with a rainbow tints on white in the background, has sheen to it, which is visible from certain angles, which gives a sense of the dimensions of the work.
